C U SOON - An amazingly crafted thriller that stands out in every possible way

I have run out of superlatives for this absolute genius of a film so I will not attempt to rave about it. When I am speechless about a film to this extent, I tend to move my focus to discuss those responsible for its massive success. The entire team deserves to be applauded. BUT I want to focus on two very important people here:

Mahesh Narayanan the director:
The first time I heard of Mahesh was a few years back when I watched this beautifully offbeat film called 'Mili' starring Amala Paul. Critics were surprisingly generous but they also noted what really made Mili so different - it was the dark and sinister undertones in the narrative that initially seemed to be a low budget slice-of-life saga, cleverly induced via competent editing by Mahesh Narayanan, which lifted the film to an unforgettable visceral experience from just another well-told story. Mahesh went on to then direct and edit some of the finest films Malayalam cinema had to offer including Traffic and Take Off. It does not come as a surprise at all to watch Mahesh unleash his creative genius in C U SOON, a bonafide Mahesh Narayanan thriller. Simpy put nobody could have done justice to this film but him.

Fahaad Fasil the actor:
People rave about Fahaad's work in Maheshinte Pratikaaram but I hated it - MP doesn't even come close to doing justice to the sheer brilliance of Fahaad as a performer. Strangely and in fact the genius of Fahaad is not as apparent in films where he is playing the lead compared to his performance in ensemble features (an exception to this theory is Annayum Rasoolum). But if you can closely examine his body of work whether it is Kumbalanghi Nights, Super Deluxe or Bangalore Days - those 10 or 20 minute roles in a 2-3 hour feature is what the audience reminisce every time they recall Fahaad the brilliant actor. Small albeit 'meaty' roles that are powerful enough to propel the entire film towards greatness, where the characters Fahaad has portrayed are bigger than the film itself. That is how powerful an actor and performer Fahaad is. No awards or accolades can do justice to the genius he is. None.

It is indeed a pleasure to watch Roshan Mathhews deliver yet another solid performance post Kapella. It is indeed a pleasure to watch Dharshana Rajendran foray into mainstream cinema by chosing to do a brave and stupendous film like C U SOON. Yes it is a team effort and yes all the 4 leads in the film are impressive beyond articulation. BUT - and I say this with a mighty conviction - the contribution of Mahesh and Fahaad to the success of C U Soon is immeasurable.
